MTH 499-02/599-02 Selected Topics in Math (“Research in Applied Statistics”) is a 3 credit course in which students will engage in the research process in relation to real data sets.

Course objective

The objective of the course is to enable students to begin to work on a genuine research project in relation to one or more of the following:

  • a publicly available and engaging data set, or data sets;
  • collection and analysis of data – a survey data, for example;
  • reviewing the applied statistical research literature on a topic of interest.
  • modifying known statistical methods of analysis or developing new methods of analysis – new clustering methods, for example.

Pre-requisites

The course has no formal pre-requisites, and is open to all students at any stage of their degree. The course does assume a certain degree of maturity in asking questions suggested by data, and being prepared to learn techniques to analyze data.

The course is particularly suitable for students – undergraduate or graduate, looking for a capstone experience.
